AI answers that use web search may draw on public pages. These steps improve clarity and accessibility; they do not guarantee mentions or rankings.
What Google and OpenAI actually say
Google. A page is eligible for AI Overviews and AI Mode if it's indexed and eligible for a snippet. The requirements are the same as regular search: Google’s AI features require no separate AI file or special structured-data schema. Relevant structured data can still help Google understand content and should match the visible page. Being shown is not guaranteed. (Google: AI features) Google recommends original, useful content with specific facts and clear sections, not mass-produced query pages. (Google: AI optimisation guide)
OpenAI. User agents with different purposes: OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search, GPTBot for model training (controlled separately), and ChatGPT-User for user-initiated page fetches, which does not control ChatGPT search eligibility and is not an automatic search crawler. Allowing them doesn't guarantee appearing in ChatGPT search. (OpenAI: bots)
The workflow: one question at a time
1. Pick one buyer question
Not "who is the best", but a question your page can answer factually. Example (fictional): Example Cleaning Ltd picks "How quickly can I book a post-move cleaning in Tallinn?"
2. Write the answer on the page as one paragraph
In the relevant section, under an H2, as the first sentence: "Post-move cleaning in Tallinn can usually be booked 3 working days ahead; a rush booking within 24 hours costs 20% more." Specific, checkable, no "quality" or "best".
3. Add evidence on the same page
A price-list line, a terms clause, a certificate number, a list of service areas. Provide an accessible HTML summary of the key evidence and link to the original source. This is practical advice, not an AI eligibility rule: PDFs can also be cited.
4. Link and name consistently
Link from the answer to the price list or terms. Make sure the company name, location and contact details match what's shown elsewhere (Google Business Profile, registers, directories). Consistent details help readers check the business and its offer; they do not guarantee a model’s choice.
5. Update and date it
Update an outdated price or condition once the new information is confirmed. If you show an "updated" date, tie it to a real substantive change, not an attempt to look fresh.
| Step | Before (fictional) | After (fictional) |
|---|---|---|
| Question | How quickly can I book? | |
| Answer | "Flexible times by arrangement" | "Usually 3 working days ahead; rush within 24 h +20%" |
| Evidence | none | price-list line "Rush booking +20%" |
| Link | none | link to the price list |
| Updated | none | 3 Nov 2026 |
Crawlers: what to allow
For Google’s AI search features, a page must be eligible for ordinary search indexing and snippets. At OpenAI, OAI-SearchBot controls ChatGPT search crawling; GPTBot concerns model training, and the settings are independent. Make robots.txt, firewall or bot-protection changes with your developer: don't switch protection off wholesale, and don't remove a noindex tag blindly, because staging and private pages are hidden on purpose.
Third-party mentions and links: make facts easy to check
A relevant third-party page may help people and search services discover public information about your business and understand its context. This is practical advice, not a confirmed AI ranking formula: neither a backlink nor a brand mention guarantees a ChatGPT or Google recommendation or citation. Keep mentions factual: correct service and location details are useful to readers even when no link is included.
Four steps towards checkable references:
- Choose a source with a real connection. Start with a genuine partner, trade association member page, supplier directory or edited industry publication where your business has a reason to appear. Avoid mass-created profiles and artificial mentions.
- Check the basic facts. The business name, service, location and contact details should be accurate and consistent. Ask to correct a specific error, not to add an unsupported “best provider” claim.
- Offer verifiable source material. Provide a public service page, terms, price list or real project example approved for publication. Give the editor a reference they can use to check the fact. Whether to publish a mention or link remains their decision.
- Track sources and answers separately. Record the source URL, corrected fact and date. If you repeat an AI sample, keep the questions, model, language and market consistent; record actual mentions and domain citations against usable answers. A later mention does not establish that the new link caused it.
Fictional correction request: “Hi, your member profile lists Example Cleaning’s old service area. The current area is published here: [public service-page URL]. Could you check the fact and update it if needed? Whether to add a link is your decision.”
Do not buy mention or link packages promising AI recommendations. Google’s link-spam policy still applies to Google Search; it does not establish another AI service’s ranking formula.
Measurement journal
Keep a simple table:
| Field | What to record |
|---|---|
| Date and page | Check date and page URL |
| Change | What you actually changed |
| Questions | The same question list in each comparison |
| Model and language | Exact model and answer language |
| Market and location | Market in the question; search location if known, otherwise “unknown” |
| Coverage | Usable / requested answers; failures separately |
| Mentions | Answers naming the brand / usable answers |
| Domain citations | Answers citing your domain / usable answers |
Keep the questions, model, language and market consistent; record the date, and record the search location only when known. Exclude unusable answers from the denominator. For example, 2 mentions in 8 usable answers gives a score of 2.5/10, not 2/10. Record own-domain citations separately. A 0/10 does not judge website quality, and a 10/10 does not mean you are "first in AI".
Track Search Console impressions and clicks separately across comparable periods: impressions are not total keyword search volume. Seasonality, sources and model changes can affect results; one comparison does not establish causation.
Quick checklist
- The page answers one real buyer question with a clear fact.
- Prices, conditions and evidence links are accurate.
- The business name and contact details are unambiguous.
- Protection and indexing settings have been checked with a developer.
- The journal separates usable answers, mentions and domain citations.
